What are Ultrasounds?

When it comes to your health, the team at Bridgewater Primary Care & Cardiology takes a comprehensive approach to diagnosing medical conditions, assessing your total wellness, and treating your issues. Ultrasounds (also called sonograms) are diagnostic imaging tests that utilize high-frequency sound waves to produce a safe and painless image of your internal body structures. A general ultrasound technique is a noninvasive and painless imaging test that uses sound waves to make images of organs and other tissues inside your body using a handheld ultrasound wand. It allows us to evaluate your different organs for function and structure integrity without surgery. Our certified ultrasound tech performs the Ultrasound test, and a board-certified radiologist will review/read the images. This versatile imaging test can be used for patients in West Bridgewater, MA of all ages to examine a wide range of organs and tissues, including:

  • Thyroid Ultrasound Test - The thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped gland that lies at the lower part of your neck. It regulates the body's metabolism by producing thyroid hormone which gives you energy. An ultrasound is performed to evaluate the thyroid for size, nodules and cysts.
  • Soft tissue Ultrasound - A soft tissue ultrasound is performed to evaluate tissue for lipomas, fibromas, epidermal and ganglion cysts, lymph nodes, and masses that are present. It is important to evaluate these lesions for size, growth, and whether they are solid or cystic.
  • Abdominal Ultrasound - Ultrasound of the abdomen is a method of evaluating structures and organs of the abdomen, including the gallbladder, liver, spleen, abdominal aorta, pancreas, and more.
  • Pelvic Ultrasound - Ultrasound of the pelvis is a method of evaluating structures and organs of the pelvis, including the uterus, ovaries, and more.
  • Appendix - Ultrasound of the right lower quadrant of the abdomen is a method to evaluate acute appendiceal disease.
  • Bladder Ultrasound - Ultrasound of the urinary bladder to evaluate the bladder wall, diverticula of the bladder, bladder stones, tumors in the bladder, bladder function, and post void residual.
  • Kidneys and renal arteries (renal & renal arterial) Ultrasound - Ultrasound of the kidneys to evaluate the size, function, arterial blood flow, and renal stones.
  • Veins (venous duplex) Ultrasound - An ultrasound of the venous blood flow in the arms and legs to evaluate how the blood is moving through the veins and to evaluate for deep vein thrombosis/clot formation.
  • Scrotum and testicles (scrotal & testicular) Ultrasound - An ultrasound of the scrotum and testicles to evaluate for any masses/cysts and any other abnormalities in the surrounding tissues.

By utilizing ultrasound technology, our team can effectively diagnose and monitor a variety of medical conditions.

What Happens During an Ultrasound?

A member of our team will guide you through the whole exam process as the instructions will vary, depending on the specific location that is being observed. Generally, we'll have you remove any articles of clothing that may obstruct the reading on the ultrasound, then have you sit or lie comfortably as we apply the medical gel to the target area. From here, a specialized handheld device glides along the designated site to reveal an image of your internal structures. Dr. Terzian will discuss your test results later and recommend more screenings or create a customized treatment plan for your condition.
